Customer

Yurika’s client manages the operations of numerous ports in Australia. They provide pilotage, towage and other marine operations, ensuring a safe and reliable service to customers. They also manage and develop assets for the coordination of freight.

Objective

Yurika was approached by the client to develop an innovative and cost-effective metering solution to record the electricity and water consumption of berthed vessels, enabling customers to be billed for their usage.

As the port was in a high traffic tourist location, the solution needed to be robust to withstand the harsh marine environment and small enough to be integrated into a slimline, visually attractive pedestal. Given that few suitable and cost-effective market solutions existed to meet our client’s needs, a new product needed to be developed.

Solution

The combination of space constraints and the need to capture multiple meter readings required a different approach. To meet the challenge, we assembled an engineering and project management team to design the solution and oversee delivery. Working collaboratively with the pedestal manufacturer, Yurika designed and built a metering solution that could record both electricity and water flow and fit inside the slimline pedestal. Yurika updated back-end systems to enable both meter reads to be captured and developed a new, intuitive user interface in the InfoDynamics user portal to enable client to quickly visualise, compare, chart and export their metering data.

Throughout the process, Yurika proactively managed risk with exceptional planning, the development of detailed specifications, and key infrastructure upgrades to deliver an outstanding product. The solution was significantly more cost-effective than current-recognised metering models and Yurika now have a proven technical specification and process that can be deployed to other ports and marinas throughout Australia.

Outcomes

The new marine pedestal is an industry first and is easy to maintain, space-saving and convenient to use. The solution means the client can now automatically record both electricity consumption and water usage of berthed vessels, improving revenue collection over the previous manual approach. In addition, the client has access to a range of data analysis tools, enabling better planning and improved revenue collection.
